타이베이의 ‘Who’s Who’는 ‘Celebrities with no Face’라는 부제를 달고, 유명인의 공적인 얼굴에 대해 다룬다.

Who’s Who is a screening exhibition project jointly planned by the Audio Visual Pavilion in South Korea and the Waley Art in Taiwan. Opening in late August and running simultaneously in Seoul (8.20-8.28) and Taiwan (8.20-9.4), the exhibition will also be featured as part of the Osmosis Audiovisual Media Festival (8.18-9.18, Taipei-Kaohsiung) in Taiwan. ‘Who’s Who’ is both the exhibition’s encompassing theme and keyword. Under the common keyword ‘Who’s Who’, the exhibition contains the stories planned and interpreted by the curators in Seoul and Taiwan.

Although Taiwan is a place that can reached by plane from Seoul in only two and a half hours, even if one were to call to mind the country’s geographical coordinates, there still remains a sense of a vast unknown. As if unfolding a directory composed of the names of individuals and their stories, Korea’s Who’s Who attempts to explore the yet unfamiliar country of Taiwan by tracing the names and stories of people. Recalling their short stint in Taiwan, in their own unique way six Korean artists weave together their memories of people and places in a short video work.

Taiwan’s Who’s Who : Celebrities with no Face attempts to discuss the celebrities’ public face in three ways. The first way investigate the Guy-Ernest Debord’s Society of the Spectacle. When the audiences receive different kinds of ideology, they will attempt to transfer themselves (particular) into spectacle (universals), we called it “deliberately created” become to “celebrities”. One is using various bewitching means of dissemination, for specific group of people to meet specific needs (such as “The Truman Show”). Another is the ethnicity suffered historical suffering. Their image always gradually formed a human appearance paragon in public impression; they become the icon face easily to recognize, can be widely identified “celebrities” appearance (the culture tag). The other is the celebrity by word of mouth, he/she exiting in the collective memory of people, but he/she will disappear without widely be on everybody's lips, becoming the existing ghosts.

What would you say was your most memorable impression of Taiwan? It could be a work from the exhibition, a street landscape, or even the cuisine. Tell us about it.

My first time visiting the country of Taiwan was the summer of 2008. I was in a state where I didn't know what I would come across or what would happen while I was in Taiwan; at that time I anticipated something exciting would happen. Although I don’t remember exactly where it was, I remember a small alley somewhere downtown near the Puppet Museum. The ambience there was similar to the old alleys in Changshin-dong or Ihwa-dong in Seoul. There was a wild boar tied to the wall of a house, and there was even an umbrella fastened above the pig creating a roof for it. It wasn't a huge boar. At that moment the owner emerged from the house so I was able to ask about the animal. It turns out that the owner had purchased the pig at a night market and raised it only to realize as it grew that it was a wild boar. Everything about the encounter—the sense of aesthetics portrayed in the suspended umbrella, the appearance of the wild pig, the scenery of the place, etc.—seemed so strange and eccentric, yet at the same time amusing and interesting. I passed by that alley and entered another, completely different alley; in that alley in front of a house there was a bird with a yellow beak and black feathers (the kind you would expect to see in a tropical rain forest) perched on an old-fashioned cloth hanger with its leg tied to the hanger.

Of the people you've come across in Taiwan, have you met anyone that you’ve continued to keep in contact with? Or, during your time in Taiwan who would you say was the most memorable person you met, whether related or unrelated to the exhibition? Please introduce their name, occupation, and where they're based.

Although I didn’t get close enough to anyone that I could continuously stay in contact with or call my friend, the curators and artists that I met in 2012 when I visited Taiwan were the kind of people that I could have a beer or cup of coffee with anytime. It was my third visit to Taiwan and I was there for an exhibition at the Contemporary Art Center in Taipei. The exhibition was called Trading Future and even the exhibition method was highly original; my relationship with the artists and curators that I met there was also somewhat special. Also, strangely enough all of them expressed a desire to settle down in Taipei. By my third visit Taipei became more attractive to me as a city and became a city that I could see myself living in. Among the acquaintances I made there was even a writer who had actually relocated to Taipei. Afterwards, and for various, different reasons, I was able to continue to meet some of the other artists either by participating together in other exhibitions or by chance in other cities.
Of course, one person who remains in my memory is a middle-aged woman that I met by means of my participation in the World of Jobs exhibition in 2008. I had met her because I wanted to visit this village that started as a temporary settlement and became somewhat of a shantytown; I met her in this type of village which appeared to be a place where indigenous natives of the island of Taiwan had emigrated to from other parts of the country and formed a settlement. In the community hall located in the center of the village you could see pictures of all different sorts of traditional festivals. I got the feeling that the people worked very hard, yet lived extremely carefree lives. A memorable moment was when the village people offered me a very unique liquor.

What would you say are the similarities and differences between Taipei and Seoul?

If you look for similarities there are sure to be many, but I primarily felt many differences. The streetscape and the city image looked like streets from the Hong Kong films I would watch as a child; the exteriors of buildings or the vegetation on the streets were very different and because of the climate I felt that even my sense of touch and smell were exceedingly different.

If you have any plans for visiting Taiwan again what are they? Or, what would be your recommendation to those who are planning a visit to Taiwan in the future; whether it's something they must do or a place they must go?

Although my trips were planned around new projects that I was working on, ultimately they became about finding and meeting people. The purpose of this visit was to meet people who have the same surname as me. People who have zero probability of passing on their family name to the next generation, mostly women. Although I can't know how my plans will actually turn out, I can only hope that I'll be able to meet them.
When I visited Taiwan in 2008 I heard something from my Taiwanese assistant who had helped me by translating for me while I was there working on a project. While pointing to an individual who was working at the gallery the assistant said to me that that person had the same surname as me. In Chinese my surname is 丘(Qiu), and that person’s surname was also Qiu, but spelled 邱. The assistant said that although the Chinese spellings are different, it was the same surname. Although my goal of finding persons with the same surname as me and starting a project based on those encounters was actually something I had loosely thought about long before, my assistant's comment and this resolute plan of mine for this visit to Taiwan seem to be related.
Also, I would like to try as many foods as I can, whether it’s the diverse kinds of noodles, foods you can only find in Taiwan, or the breakfast foods that Taiwanese enjoy. In particular I want to eat niuroutang, the spicy and oily beef noodle soup. Also, I have other plans such as trying all of the different fruit that can be found in Taiwan and visiting the markets.
As for things that other people should try or things to do, I would recommend going to Tamsui, which is a beach area near Taipei. I would also recommend learning Chinese before going and eating as many diverse foods as you can. Also, even though I haven't personally gone yet, it would be nice to visit other cities besides Taipei.

What would you say was your most memorable impression of Taiwan? It could be a work from the exhibition, a street landscape, or even the cuisine. Tell us about it.

My most memorable impression of Taiwan was the dogs loitering in the streets. On one occasion I was visiting the outskirts of Taiwan with my travel companion and I saw many dogs loitering around the street. Although you could also occasionally see dogs in the city centers, the image of packs of dogs grouped together like feral animals left quite an impression on me. Luckily these feeble dogs loitering around vacant lots didn't pose a threat to people. Rather, they appeared to be anonymous figures, like city dwellers apathetic to each other's existence.

Of the people you've come across in Taiwan, have you met anyone that you’ve continued to keep in contact with? Or, during your time in Taiwan who would you say was the most memorable person you met, whether related or unrelated to the exhibition? Please introduce their name, occupation, and where they're based.

When visited Taiwan for the first time it was for a short 7-day trip. Because of this I didn't form any relationships with people that I could continuously stay in contact with. If I had to choose one person that I remember most, it would be the individual who was working as an assistant curator at TAV. Although I can't remember her name, she was very friendly and worked hard to assist us in every way. Also, I remember that she had a very distinctive, special laugh which allowed us to develop a bond and trust.

What would you say are the similarities and differences between Taipei and Seoul?

Lately, Koreans have been referring to Korea as "Hell Joseon" as a criticism of the absurdity of the present reality. Likewise, Taiwanese call their country "guido" (haunted island). Although their histories are different I believe that both countries are experiencing similar political situations and economic difficulties. Although there are surface-level similarities and cultural differences between Korea and Taiwan, I found the similarities regarding the worries of life arising within these circumstances to be interesting.

If you have any plans for visiting Taiwan again what are they? Or, what would be your recommendation to those who are planning a visit to Taiwan in the future; whether it's something they must do or a place they must go?

My reason for visiting Taiwan the first time was because I wanted to personally visit countries with a similar landscape as Korea. This was because I was curious about the present image of the few countries that in the past were referred to as the Asian Tigers. Although it's difficult to understand a lot of things about Taiwan through just a short time spent there, through my understanding as an Asian coming from a similar environment I plan to work on project using my perspective as an art worker with a life and experiences gathered in a different land.

What would you say was your most memorable impression of Taiwan? It could be a work from the exhibition, a street landscape, or even the cuisine. Tell us about it.

When I first arrived in Taiwan the thing that most stood out was the trees of the streetscape; in particular the image of twisting Banyan trees binded to buildings or street walls left a unique, exotic impression. The cityscape of streets packed with an enormous number of motorbikes and both the grand and modest religious practices occurring on the street were memorable. Rather than one scene in particular, the various elements mingling together to form a city where tradition and modernity coexists left a strong impression.

Of the people you've come across in Taiwan, have you met anyone that you’ve continued to keep in contact with? Or, during your time in Taiwan who would you say was the most memorable person you met, whether related or unrelated to the exhibition? Please introduce their name, occupation, and where they're based.

In 2014 I participated in the TAV residency program. When I was there I met different writers and staff, and through their introduction became acquainted with several other individuals, such as Liang Pin Tsao, a writer and independent curator. He recently established a small photographic library called 'Light Box' in the city of Taipei, and is using the space to actively run a talk program featuring photographers.

What would you say are the similarities and differences between Taipei and Seoul?

Even though Taiwan (like Korea) has a history of occupation by Japan, Taiwanese are considerably favorable towards Japan. It gives the impression of a country which artfully mixes the cultures of China and Japan, and I get the feeling that the country is a blend of the personality of the people and the distinct features of the two countries. Also, Taiwan mixes elements of traditional culture with the exterior of a modern city, giving it a quite different atmosphere than Seoul.

If you have any plans for visiting Taiwan again what are they? Or, what would be your recommendation to those who are planning a visit to Taiwan in the future; whether it's something they must do or a place they must go?

During my residency at TAV in 2014 I worked on a project regarding the means of honoring/memorializing the death of humans and animals. This time around in Taiwan I plan to further develop this work/project regarding this idea. In addition, if I have time to spare I would like to travel around the southern central area of Taiwan to see the unique natural landscapes.

What would you say was your most memorable impression of Taiwan? It could be a work from the exhibition, a street landscape, or even the cuisine. Tell us about it.

The air and the heat. Before I got used to it, it was difficult for me to walk even 50 meters. Also, the pedestrian overpasses gave me a hard time. In Korea pedestrian overpasses are largely disappearing, but in Taiwan there are so many pedestrian bridges. Like traveling in Tokyo, in Taiwan I walked up and down many pedestrian bridges. The problem was because of the high heat and humidity in Taiwan it was tough climbing up each step of the pedestrian bridges. It was like gravity increased with every step.

Of the people you've come across in Taiwan, have you met anyone that you’ve continued to keep in contact with? Or, during your time in Taiwan who would you say was the most memorable person you met, whether related or unrelated to the exhibition? Please introduce their name, occupation, and where they're based.

Every now and then I hear news about Monique Lee. Monique Lee runs a fine arts independent bookstore called ‘Shimokitazawa Generations’ in Taipei, and is simultaneously a creator and designer. She also runs ‘Washida HOME STORE’ a costume and props store in Taichung, and assists in the operation of a publishing company with some of her young, fellow writers in Taiwan creating various artists books.

What would you say are the similarities and differences between Taipei and Seoul?

If you look for similarities and differences there's certain to be many. In Taiwan I was occasionally asked questions that I had not often been asked before in other places. They asked questions like, what school did you graduate from? Who were the professors there? These questions point to a level of exchange so high that they would be familiar with the names of schools and which professors were at which schools; but because I had never been asked these questions before it came as a shock to me. But then again if I think about it, Koreans are also very curious about which school people graduated from and under which professors they studied. I was genuinely surprised by their questions and the reactions I got to my answers because they were so similar to Koreans.

If you have any plans for visiting Taiwan again what are they? Or, what would be your recommendation to those who are planning a visit to Taiwan in the future; whether it's something they must do or a place they must go?

Taiwan is overflowing with places to see and things to do, such as delicious food and night markets and cheap, friendly taxis. You would need more than a day to take in the entire art scene. Among those places, the place I would most recommend would be ‘Eslite Bookstore’. If you were to go there however, you might be disappointed to find that the majority of bookstores (like most large-scale bookstores) take on the form of a shopping mall rather than a conventional bookstore. However, some of the positive things about the bookstores is that each branch maintains its own unique character and stays open until late at night. The ability to look at books late at night is a huge benefit to travelers with limited time. These bookstores are comparable to Kyobo or Young Poong books in Korea, or Tsutaya or Kinokuniya in Japan. Also, the printing quality of Taiwan is quite substantial. You can see for yourself by looking at the exhibition posters and leaflets. If you're in Taiwan and you visit a bookstore make sure you pick up some books that were printed in Taiwan. Even if you can't understand the text, there is a certain pleasure that comes from just enjoying the quality of the book.

(Why does the wind blow wherever we remember loved ones?)»

What would you say was your most memorable impression of Taiwan? It could be a work from the exhibition, a street landscape, or even the cuisine. Tell us about it.

A picture of a small planet and the orbit which surrounds it drawn on the back of her hand.

It had a much more mysterious feeling that this but now I can't remember it too clearly. She was the friend of the planner of an exhibition I was participating in. During the exhibition period she let me stay in a spare room in the her house. When I, a stranger to her, asked about the meaning of the tattoo on the back of her hand, she told me the story of how she was sent away. She was going to go on living a life which revolved only around herself. Her story was extremely sad, yet beautiful.
Suddenly, I thought about the stars. The kind of dream that one dreams while knowing that it's just a dream.
For a while, with the intention of experiencing a lucid dream, I would fall asleep after drawing stars on the spot where the planet and its orbits were drawn. Unfortunately, the dream that I once had of the stars was an awakened dream.
Turning the corner into a narrow alley there's a market with delicious red bean cakes and coffee. Located on the 4th floor of an old building somewhere within the market, her house had a small balcony with a sliding door and wild flowers plants; for some reason it reminded me of my grandmother's inn which I recalled from my childhood. My mother once told me the story of how I had fell from the pomegranate tree in the courtyard of my grandmother's inn while I was picking its fruit; I was surprised to be reminded that I was that kind of child. Now my grandmother's inn is buried under an eight lane highway. Leaning on the balcony railing I leisurely listened to the incomprehensible shouting of the man in the adjacent building which was under construction, and watched the motorbikes zipping by the narrow alley and the neighborhood dogs strolling by.

Of the people you've come across in Taiwan, have you met anyone that you’ve continued to keep in contact with? Or, during your time in Taiwan who would you say was the most memorable person you met, whether related or unrelated to the exhibition? Please introduce their name, occupation, and where they're based.

I used my projects as a pretext to meet many people in Taiwan. My Taiwanese friends who were familiar with my work introduced me to numerous Taiwanese master craftsmen and professionals. In my works it has been rare for me approach people by means of the recommendation of others, so in this respect progress has been difficult. Meeting master artisans who make cotton blankets, professionals who carve ear cleaning instruments out of bamboo, experts at noodle making, and master craftsmen who produce traditional ink, (notwithstanding the wonder of their skills) I realized the truth that all the individuals that I met could not live within their work. As a result I was able to meet two figures—Zhang Jieguan, a type-founder, and Huang Xianzhang, a master wooden doll carver—whose work made me question the notion of artistic attitude.
A Japanese curator who I’ve known for a while introduced me to Amy Cheng, who runs a art space called Cube. Cube (although small), which displays radical projects, along with the simplicity and informality of Amy and Jeph (the managers of the space) left a deep impression on me.
A few years later as I was participating in the Cite program in Paris I met curator Jia Zhen. We spent 6 close months together and were able to share ideas about projects and exhibitions. Our conversations from this time were realized the following year in an exhibition run by Zhen titled Why does the wind blow whenever we remember loved ones? which brought together ‘Tamtam Art’ space and ‘Cube’. In preparing for the exhibit I received a lot of help from Liang Ini, Tsao Liang-Pin, Chiang Ling-Ching, and Lee Li-Chun as we discussed all the minor details and produced original content.
Y was the first “friend” that I met in Taiwan. She had a lot of interest in Korean idol groups; I taught her Korean as she taught me simple Chinese, such as placing orders. The first Korean word that I taught her was “chingoo” (friend). I was amused by the sound that she made as she shaped her lips and put her all into pronouncing the word “chingoo”. But oh my gosh, 2PM? If I meet someone with such childish preferences in Seoul I probably wouldn't be friends with them.
After I entered my thirties I no longer became friends with people as easily as before. At that time Y was the only exception; I was severely shy and helpless against the heat and she affectionately took care of me, we became “friends” as if we were the same age.
She was working as an intern at the TAV residence program where I was staying. She had just come over from Hong Kong to literally do volunteer work without any compensation. Although she was making good money she became sick and tired of Hong Kong, a place centered on consumption. Because I felt out of breath from the fast-paced lifestyle of Seoul, for a few years already departing from and arriving back to Korea has become like second nature to me.
Sharing this in common, our time spent in Taiwan was really great.
Sluggishly and lumpish from the heat as the hours crawled by, to cool ourselves off from the heat my friend and I would frequently sit in a nicely decorated cafe eating scones or sipping coffee, or watch people reading books in a bookstore late into the evening. I remember we would talk about our own shyness in that bookstore. We flipped through a book titled Quiet which talked about the inner strength/possibilities of introverts. Y had said that for a very long time she had lived her life hiding her introverted tendencies; for some reason I felt shy listening to the secret of this girl, everything about which was so bright and sweet. I thought that it was perfectly acceptable for me to be an artist who is as shy, timid or introverted as I pleased. (However, it's true that this current age demands that artists not be this way. ) I felt at ease knowing that I could hide behind my work or let my work speak for me.
Because my 'friend' is very shy like me, I won't give specific details about her name, occupation or where she's based.

What would you say are the similarities and differences between Taipei and Seoul?

On the day I arrived in Taiwan it was pouring rain. I remember wandering around the streets pulling my suitcase under the heavy August rain. Although the place I was headed was right under my nose the entire time, I just kept going in circles around the building. I had never experienced such a heat wave and torrential rain. Luckily, anywhere you went in the city was air conditioned. As I prepared for the exhibition the following year I stayed in Taiwan for one week in January; at that time the city was struck by an unexpected cold wave that hadn't been experienced in decades. Now that I think about it, the coldness then was probably only about as cold as the late autumn temperature in Seoul. Unfortunately, there were no heating systems wherever you went in the city.
At the National Palace Museum of Taiwan I saw the famous Jadeite Cabbage and Meat-Shaped Stone made of jasper. I heard the long story of how the Jadeite Cabbage and Meat-Shaped Stone took a plane and arrived at that place with great difficulty. Holding the Jadeite Cabbage keychain that I bought as a souvenir I thought about the Hamheung-style naengmyun (cold noodles) that I tried in Jangchung-dong a couple of days ago. The restaurant, which was owned by an elderly woman who had missed the taste of her hometown after defecting from North Korea, had become very successful after being featured on a South Korean TV program. Reflecting on the cabbage which left its origins and became an icon and the success of the naengmyun restaurant, I suddenly became curious about the various reasons why numerous things move and resettle.
I experienced a kind of comfort from the labyrinth-like underground electronic centers where you could seem to find whatever you’re looking for, the night markets lined with food streets, and the endless row of fancy cafés. There is a loose connection which cannot be traversed simply by similarities and differences in the relationship between Taiwan and Korea, the speed of transformation and the breathing of life perceived by people, the degree of subtle emotions towards Japan, or the respective understandings, misunderstandings, amiability, and anger towards North Korea and China.

If you have any plans for visiting Taiwan again what are they? Or, what would be your recommendation to those who are planning a visit to Taiwan in the future; whether it's something they must do or a place they must go?

I like to remember cities by tastes. The lingering tastes embedded in my memory become a map which details the alleyways of the city. When I start to crave xiaolongbao I want to get on a plane immediately. Around the time that I became captivated by the harmonious flavor of gravy, ginger and soy sauce bursting from the thin skin of the dumpling, I found out about an annual xiaolongbao competition held in Taiwan. Similar to the annual baguette competition held in Paris. The winner of that year's competition wasn't the corporate giant Din Tai Fung, but a humble corner shop. I asked around and found that store; I will never forget the taste of their xiaolongbao.

I like to learn about cities through films. Actually, rather than interpreting the contents of a film, I find it more enjoyable to infer the director's thought process as to how to represent a particular city in the making of a film, or the chemistry that exists between the director and that society. Therefore, if I ever get the opportunity to make a legitimate film I would really like to make one about Seoul that depicts my culinary preferences.
Anyway, looking at Taiwanese new wave directors, someone said the following: "When you look at this city, this society as a disease, there are three types of thinking. The first is oriental medicine which examines the pulse and listens carefully to the disease; the second is western medicine which yields a knife and exposes the affected area; and the last is becoming the disease itself." As I watched all of the films of Hou Hisao-Hisen, Edward Yang, and Tsai Ming-Liang, I thought that there couldn't be a more precise metaphor for their work. Artists, do you examine the pulse, expose the affected areas with a knife, or become the disease itself? Although I have to agree that the premise of calling the city a disease is a bit harsh.

What would you say was your most memorable impression of Taiwan? It could be a work from the exhibition, a street landscape, or even the cuisine. Tell us about it.

I have so many fond memories that it's hard to choose. I can’t choose just one, so I'll mention three of them. The first one is the view I witnessed from Taiwan's Alishan Mountains. I'll never forget the Alishan forest trails where I could encounter trees that were over one thousand years old, the image of clouds rising from under my feet and flowing across the mountain range, and the experience of greeting the rising and setting sun with my body. It makes me think of the film Clouds of Sils Maria. Like in the film, the body suddenly fades away as you face this greatness of nature.
The second would be the sight of the Buddha Memorial Center on Fo Guang Mountain in the Kaohsiung area. Although the jaw-dropping, enormous scale Buddha statue, pagoda and building are impressive in themselves, the interior of the building combined with cutting edge media devices were even more exciting. The facilities which apply new media such as 4D films or interactive art are actively utilized in order to allow visitors to learn about and experience Buddhis. Here you could also see people experiencing a sort of religious delight. To give a specific example, at first one stands on a spot marked on the ground. After waiting a while special effects complete with lights and sounds suddenly appear along with a sign that reads 'You are enlightened'; these diverse effects leave the visitor with a sense of satisfaction. The last thing was the beautiful altars for the gods in Taiwan. There were many altars for gods (both small and large) placed in family homes or restaurants, etc. The faces of the gods were blackened by the endless burning of incenses over long periods of time. I heard something interesting when I asked about the diverse types of alter configurations. The gods of folklore are numerous and when people create and decorate their alter they freely place the items of other gods on the alter as they please; through this mixing eventually one alter becomes an alter to many gods. I took these words to mean that 'each makes his own god and enshrines it in his home'.

Of the people you've come across in Taiwan, have you met anyone that you’ve continued to keep in contact with? Or, during your time in Taiwan who would you say was the most memorable person you met, whether related or unrelated to the exhibition? Please introduce their name, occupation, and where they're based.

There's one person that I met in Taiwan who I've continued to stay in contact with. Her English name is Suzy and she works as a graphic designer in Taipei. I met her through the introduction of a fellow writer; while I was staying in Tainan for a month she was also visiting Tainan so we lived in the same apartment. Occasionally she would talk about her grandmother who had come over from mainland China. She told me that she experienced discrimination because one/some of her family members had come from the mainland. She was friends with many foreigners who were residing in Taiwan and was interested in other cultures, for this reason we could understand each other well. The time would fly by as the two of us chatted together comparing the cultures of Korea and Taiwan. I plan to stay at her place when I visit this time around.
However, while Suzy was a friend she wasn't the single most memorable person I met. The person who comes to mind from my trip to Taiwan is the manager 'Hao', who worked at a theatre which was located in the art center where I was having an exhibition. This gentleman would repeat the words hao hao (meaning, good good) so many times that me and my friends gave him the nickname 'Hao'. That theatre in Tainan had a high ceiling and was slightly larger than that of a mid-sized theatre, it had been built a long time ago and exuded a considerably grand and dignified presence. Hao was a scrawny gentleman in his 50's(?) and when he walked he swayed as he moved as if his legs were slightly lame. The reason why I remember him most is because of an incident that occurred on the day of my opening performance. When I arrived at the theatre on the performance day I noticed that bags of Taiwanese chips which resembled Cheetos had been placed on top of the many kinds of equipment that were needed for the performance. My fellow writers and I immediately opened one of the bags and starting eating the chips; then from out of nowhere Hao emerged waving his hands and came wobbling over. The chips were offered to gods so that the equipment wouldn't malfunction during the performance that day. Although it's common to see food for the gods placed here and there on the streets of Taiwan, I will never forget Mr. Hao and how he placed those shiny bags of chips on top of the various monitors and projectors with their tangled wires. I also wish him well.

What would you say are the similarities and differences between Taipei and Seoul?

The commonality between Taiwan and Seoul that everybody is aware of is that both countries have a history of colonial occupation by Japan. However, the amicability of Taiwanese towards Japanese is one of the things that occasionally surprises Koreans; if you briefly examine the modern history of Taiwan you can understand why. Although they say the method of Japanese colonial occupation was different in Taiwan than Korea, after being liberated from Japan, Taiwan immediately underwent a period of military dictatorship brought on from the outside by the Kuomingtang/Nationalist Party. Of course, Korea too was governed by successive military regimes as well, but different than Korea it is said that in Taiwan it wasn't the military government, but the Japanese colonial rule which brought about the base of modernization. If you listen to the stories of how compared to the period of Japanese occupation the oppression and exploitation experienced in the period of Kuomingtang rule immediately following liberation wasn't less but more severe, rather you being to question the anti-Japanese sentiments prevalent in Korean society.
(When I traveled around Taiwan there were many instances when I was treated very kindly especially by elderly people. They spoke to me in Japanese. In contrast, when I told younger people that I came from Korea sometimes they expressed feelings of hostility.) As for the differences that I noticed between Taiwan and Korea, Taiwan is composed of many ethnic groups, also the religions and traditions (while seemingly few) are more closely intertwined in the lives of the people. Because I was personally interested in the ethnic groups of Taiwan I looked up information on them and I found that presently, Taiwan is divided into four (or five) main ethnic groups: Aborigines, Minnanren, Hakka, new immigrants, (Mainlanders). Please refer to the information below.
‘Ethnic groups in Taiwan’ (Source: Eyes on Taiwan, Choi Won Sik et. al, Changbi Publishers, 2012)
Austro-Polynesians (Aborigines) vs Han Chinese
Austro-Polynesians – Pingpu Zu (semi-civilized aborigines) (10 groups) vs Wild tribesmen (9 groups)
Immigrants (Han Chinese who migrated during the Qing Dynasty) – Minnanren vs Hakka
Natives (Han Chinese who lived under Japanese rule and their descendants (73% Minnanren, 12% Hakka)) vs Mainlanders (Those who immigrated after 1945, although they form only 13% of the entire population they are the ruling group)

If you have any plans for visiting Taiwan again what are they? Or, what would be your recommendation to those who are planning a visit to Taiwan in the future; whether it's something they must do or a place they must go?

On my last visit I was in Tainan for 3 weeks, this time I plan to stay in Taipei for 3 weeks. I'm excited for this trip because the two cities are so different. Also, because the nation switched presidents since I was there last, I'm curious about what other transformations can be experienced. First, I plan to take a work-related visit to "Kimchi Oppa", a Korean restaurant. I'm also thinking about visiting places related to the February 28th Incident. I also want to try doing one of those dancing gorilla performances on the street. To those who plan to visit in the future I would recommend making a Taiwanese friend.

‹Fortunate My Ass- The story of Black Hand’s Nakasi Labor band

이번 전시에 선보이는 작업 ‹Fortunate My Ass- The story of Black Hand’s Nakasi Labor band福氣個屁-工人樂隊黑手那卡西›은 대만 노동자 운동(工人運動)에서 시작됐다.
