작가 Sasa[44]/홍승혜의 전시 «교차확인(Cross Check)»전이 2021년 5월 13일부터 6월 30일까지 시청각 랩에서 열린다. 전시에서 Sasa[44]/홍승혜는 서로의 작업을 선택하고 상대의 작업 제작 방법론을 실행한다. ‘언젠가는 한 번 함께 전시할 것’을 구상했던 두 작가의 계획이 비로소 실현되는 것이다. 그들의 전시 ‘만들기’는 각자의 작업을 공간에 펼쳐 놓는 2인전의 방식으로 안착하지 않는다. 이 전시는 ‘작품을 한다는 것’ 그리고 ‘전시를 함께 연다’는 것에 관한 비평적 독해이다.

«교차확인»에서 두 작가는 상대의 작품과 방법론을 연구하고 선택해 나간다. Sasa[44]/홍승혜의 아이디어와 규칙은 이번 전시에서 서로 포개어지고 변화한다. 새로운 개념과 형식을 찾는다. 그들은 서로 전시되어야 할 작업을 선택했다. 그에 앞서 긴 시간 서로의 작업을 관람하고 탐구한 시간이 있었다. 전시의 구조에 대해 동시에 발상하고 따로, 또 함께 제작했다. 반대하고 수렴했다. 한 작가가 먼저 시작한 선택을 이어 나가며 결정하고 구체화했다.

홍승혜와 Sasa[44]의 ‘교차확인’은 전시의 이름이면서 행동의 슬로건이다. 전시에서 우리는 단호한 선택들이 공존하는 여러 개의 장면들을 볼 수 있다. 예로 Sasa[44]가 선택한 1993년 홍승혜의 종이 콜라주 작업 옆에는 Sasa[44]의 1993년 강의계획서가 놓인다. 전시에서 관객은 Sasa[44]가 선택한 팬톤의 2021년 대표 색상 옐로우와 그레이를, 홍승혜 작가의 인터뷰 답변에 깃든 쉼표까지 계산된 호흡의 조율을 경험하게 된다. «교차확인»의 작업들은 결정이 중요하다는 점에서 ‘결정 특정적’이다. 두 작가의 집요한 탐구와 수행에 의해 완성된 이 전시에는 통찰과 정보가 있다. 전시에는 두 작가의 큰 그림과 디테일, 지시문과 실행의 여정이 있다. «교차확인»은 작가가 행하는 작가에 관한 연구다.

홍승혜
1982년 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업한 후 도불, 1986년 파리 국립미술학교를 졸업했다. 1986년부터 현재까지 20여회의 개인전을 열었고 다수의 국내외 기획 단체전에 참여했다. 1997년 국제갤러리에서 열린 개인전 «유기적 기하학»을 시작으로 컴퓨터 픽셀의 구축을 기반으로 한 실재 공간의 운영에 깊은 관심을 보여 왔다. 기하학적 도형에 움직임과 사운드를 도입한 영상 작업 및 음표의 구축을 통한 음악 작업으로 점차 영역을 확장하고 있다.

미술가. 개인전으로 «쇼쇼쇼-쇼는 계속되어야 한다’를 재활용하다»(문예진흥원 예술극장, 모다페 2005 프로그램), «우리 동네»(김진혜 갤러리, 2006), «오토 멜랑콜리아»(대안공간 풀, 2008), «가위, 바위, 보»(시청각, 2016), 『엉망』(일민미술관, 2018), «와당탕퉁탕»(서울시립 북서울미술관, 2021)등을 열었고, 일민미술관, 백남준아트센터, 아르코 미술관, 경기도미술관, 리움, 플라토, 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 등에서 열린 전시에 참여했다. 작가는 2006년부터 매해 〈연차보고(Annual Report)〉를, 2016년부터 매해 〈갱생(Rehab)〉을 제작한다.

AVP Lab presents Cross Check, the exhibition of artists Sasa[44]/Hong Seung-Hye from May 13 through June 30, 2021. In the exhibition, Sasa[44]/Hong Seung-Hye select each other’s work and production methodology. The two artists’ plan to exhibit together one day is finally being realized. Their exhibition “making” does not settle in the way of a two-person exhibition in which each of their work is displayed together in a space. The exhibition is a critical reading of “making work” and “exhibiting together.”

In Cross Check, the two artists study and select each other’s work and methodology. Sasa[44]/Hong Seung-Hye’s ideas and rules lay over each other and transform in the exhibition. They have searched for new concepts and forms. They have picked each other’s project that should be exhibited. In prior, there was a long period of time for them to observe and explore each other’s work. They have simultaneously developed the exhibition structure, and produced both separately and in collaboration. They have opposed and accepted. As one artist made a choice, the other proceeded by definitization and actualization.

Hong Seung-Hye and Sasa[44]’s “Cross Check” is both the title of the exhibition and a slogan to their action. In the exhibition, one may observe several scenes in which firm decisions co-exist. For example, next to Hong Seung-Hye’s 1993 paper collage work, which Sasa[44] has selected, Sasa[44]’s 1993 lecture syllabus is placed. Moreover, a viewer may experience the yellow and gray–Pantone’s Color of the Year 2021–that Sasa[44] has chosen, and Hong Seung-Hye’s meticulously calculated breathing even to the point of a comma in her interview. The works in Cross Check are “decision-specific” in that the decisions made are important. Completed with the two artists’ persistent exploration and execution, this exhibition contains insight and information. In the exhibition, there are the two artists’ master plan and details, instructions, and a journey of execution. Cross Check is a study of an artist conducted by an artist.
