S, M, SM, SMSM은 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 네 명의 작가의 작품으로 구성된 기획전이다. 첫째 이 전시는 방대한 양의 작업을 진행하는 네 작가, Sasa[44], 박미나, 슬기와 민 작업의 일부 ‘선별된’ 프로젝트를 보여준다. 따라서 이 전시를 본 관객은 싱가포르의 이 전시공간에 배치된 이들의 작업이 S(Sasa[44]) M(박미나), SM(슬기와 민) 작업의 극히 일부분이라는 점을 인지해야 할 것이다. 여기 놓인 작업은 S, M, SM의 콜렉티브 그룹인 SMSM을 중심으로 점조직 형태로 구성되어 있다. 그러므로 전시장의 작품은 네 명의 작가가 그려내는 다이어그램을 이해하는 몇 단서인 셈이다.

그레이 프로젝트, 템포러리 프레스, 시청각
둘째, 이 전시는 그레이 프로젝트의 제이슨 위 초청으로 이뤄졌다. 즉 네 작가의 일부 작업인, 단서들이 싱가포르의 템포러리 유닛에 전시될 수 있었던 이유는 작가 제이슨 위의 초청으로 인해 서울에 위치해있던 작가들의 작업이 모두 이동했기 때문이다. 전시 제안자인 그레이 프로젝트, 전시 운영자인 템포러리 프레스, 그리고 이 전시를 기획한 큐레이터가 운영하는 전시공간 시청각 랩은 모두 전시 공간 안에서의 출판, 인쇄물과 큐레토리얼의 관계를 다룬다는 점에서 공통적이다. 슬기와 민의 그래픽 디자인과 전시, 출판, 글쓰기를 잇는 활동, Sasa[44]의 아카이브와 기록, 박미나의 회화를 다루는 수집과 연구의 방법론 등은 모두 이 전시장에 놓인 작업을 경로 삼아 오랜 시간을 들여 찬찬히 살펴봐야 한다. 이번 전시 S, M, SM, SMSM에는 슬기와 민, 박미나, Sasa[44]의 작업 중 1) 시청각에서 전시되었던 작업 2) SMSM이라는 이들의 콜렉티브 이름으로 진행된 작업 3) 회색과 무지개 색을 가진 작업으로 선별되었다.

애뉴얼 리포트
셋째, 이 전시에서 Sasa[44]는 2006년 이후 매년 제작하던 애뉴얼 리포트를 템포러리 프레스의 리소 인쇄기로 제작했다. 2022년 Sasa[44]의 움직임은 최슬기가 진행하는 한 수업의 참여자들에 의해 디자인되었고, 2023년 여름 싱가포르의 기데온 콩과 제이미 여에 의해 완성되었다.

글 현시원

S, M, SM, SMSM is an exhibition of works by four Seoul-based artists: Sasa[44], MeeNa Park, and Sulki & Min. Presenting a small fraction from their vast bodies of works as a curated collection, they consist of both individual and collective works as the title cues: S for Sasa[44], M for MeeNa Park, SM for Sulki & Min, and SMSM for the applied art collective they started together since 2009, one devoted to health and happiness. Travelling for the first time from Seoul to Singapore, some of the works are outcomes from previous exhibitions that provide clues and context to other works on display.

More specifically, the selection in this exhibition presents works that have been exhibited in AVP Lab, works carried out under the collective SMSM, and works with ‘gray’ and ‘rainbow’ colours. These draw from Sulki & Min’s activities in graphic design, making exhibitions, publishing, and writing, Sasa[44]’s activities in recording and archiving, and MeeNa Park’s activities in painting methodologically through collection and research.

A new work, Annual Report 2023 by Sasa[44], is produced and made for this exhibition as part of the Annual Report series that the artist has been producing every year since 2006. This was designed and put together by participants in a class taught by Sulki Choi, and printed by Temporary Press in the summer of 2023.

S, M, SM, SMSM is realised and organised by the invitation of Jason Wee of Grey Projects (Singapore), curated by Seewon Hyun of Audio Visual Lab (AVP) (Seoul), and produced together with Kyusun Shim. Along with Temporary Unit (Singapore) as a hosting collaborator, the three spaces share the common interest of navigating the relationship between publishing, writing, research, and curatorial activities.
