시청각 랩은 2021년 9월 2일부터 10월 17일까지 슬기와 민 개인전 «보간법»을 개최한다. 이번 전시에서 슬기와 민은 신작 영상 네 점과 설치 작업, 프린트 연작 등을 선보인다. 이들 작품은 근과거와 2021년을 통과한다. 배경과 형상, 내부와 외부, 변화와 고정된 상태를 교차시키고, 이제껏 이들이 구축/해체, 배열/재배치해 온 다양한 시각적 정보들을 외면하거나 변화시키는 작품들이다. 이 전시를 위해 슬기와 민이 제작한 영상은 모두 회색 조다. 또 전시 공간의 축을 가로지르는 설치 작업은 직접 전시장에 와야만 볼 수 있는 사물이자 움직이는 공간이다. 움직이거나 멈춰 있는 슬기와 민의 작업은 명료하다. 그러나 변화한다. 또 무엇을 지시하기 위한 목표나 절차를 드러내기를 거부한다.
이지원이 썼듯, 슬기와 민은 언제나 언어와 매체를 다뤄 왔다. “그들은 장치 자체와 장치가 디스플레이하는 이미지의 관계로 시선을 돌리고, 매체와 내용을 하나의 통일체로 간주하기를 원한다.” 그는 그것이 “미디어아트를 해석하는 태도일지도 모른다”고 암시했다. 이를 따라 쓰자면, 슬기와 민의 작업은 언제나 어떤 대상을 해석하는 ‘태도’ 자체를 제시해 왔다. 정보와 효과, 반복과 변화를 다루며 대상의 속성을 사물의 외양과 동등한 가치로 역전시켰다. 마치 속성이란 없는 것처럼 말이다. 이때 도드라지는 것은 내용과 의미보다 외양의 구조와 고정된 규범의 존재다. 즉 그들의 작업은 태도에 관한 태도, 형식에 대한 형식을 다룬다. 슬기와 민은 ‘보는 법’과 이로 인해 발생하는 효과와 기대치를 기술적으로 설계한다. 또 동시에 이를 둘러싼 기능과 절차의 규칙을 역전시킨다. 정보와 인용, 가독성의 플레이를 전시 공간으로 옮겨 놓은 «보간법»은 시청각 랩의 공간 구조를 전시의 구조로 가져온다. 전시는 배경의 압도 속에서 슬기와 민의 ‘전시’에 대한 태도를 보여 준다.

The AVP Lab presents Sulki and Min’s Interpolation from September 2 through October 17, 2021. The exhibition includes four new videos and an installation, as well as a print series. The works run through the recent past and 2021. They cross the relationship between figure and background, inside and outside, as well as changes and fixed states, disregarding or transforming various visual data that they have de/constructed and re/arranged. The videos they made for this exhibition are all gray. The installation traversing the venue’s axis is an object that must be experienced in situ as well as a moving space itself. Moving or still, Sulki and Min’s work is clearly defined. Yet it also changes. And it refuses a role to explain or reveal procedures.
As Rhee Z-won wrote, Sulki and Min have always dealt with language and media. “[They] shift your attention to the devices and their relationship with what they display, encouraging you to treat both the medium and the content as a whole.” And she implies that it may have something to do with their attitude on “media art.” Following this suggestion, one may say that Sulki and Min’s work always displays an “attitude” on interpreting whatever objects. While dealing with information vs. effects and repetition vs. change, it reverses the relationship between an object’s substance and appearance – as if there is no such a thing as substance. What it highlights, then, is not any content or meaning but the structure of appearance and the existence of fixed norms. In other words, their work is about an attitude on the attitude, a form of the form. They delicately design the “ways of seeing” and the effects and expectations that they cause. At the same time, they turn around functions and normal procedures related to them. Interpolation brings the spatial structure of the AVP Lab to that of the exhibition, as it translates the play of information, quotation, and readability into the space. Against the overwhelming background, it shows Sulki and Min’s attitude on “exhibition.”
